Alberta Education announces 2 year delay in curriculum implementation, effective December 1, 2009: The dates for the implementation of five areas of curriculum have been revised as of December 1, 2009. The English and French revised Implementation Schedule for Programs of Study and Related Activities 2009-2010 and the accompanying Quick Reference Provincial Implementation Dates (2008-2009) are now posted on the Education website at: www.education.alberta.ca/teachers.aspx. The 3rd annual High School Culinary Challenge was held at NAIT on February 6. Three-member student teams from 13 high schools in the Edmonton region created three-course meals (soup, entrée and dessert) in three hours. The courses were all plated and presented for judging. Teams from the Skill Centre, Jasper Place, Harry Ainlay and Queen Elizabeth schools represented Edmonton Public Schools in the competition.
The Edmonton High School Culinary Challenge was launched by the Canadian Culinary Foundation, Edmonton to intruduce high school students to the possibility of a career in the culinary arts. (S. Forster, 780-498-8766)
On Thursday, January 28, 2010, the Skill Centre was officially launched. The evening included tours of the facility classrooms, a F1 CO2 car race launch and a short program.

In manufacturing/Pre-Engineering students have 11 units which use tools to simulate real world applications; these tools include CNC mill and a Robot. The Culinary Arts classes are using a newly renovated industrial kitchen which includes Rational ovens and steam kettles.

Wellness
The Framework for Kindergarten to Grade 12 Wellness Education is available online at www.education.alberta.ca/teachers/program/pe.aspx (English) and www.education.alberta.ca/francais/teachers/progres/core/edphys.aspx (French).
The framework outlines the fundamental concepts and inherent values of wellness education and provides guidance for the future development and implementation of Kindergarten to Grade 12 wellness education programs of study in Alberta.
The framework responds to the growing concern for the health of children and youth in today's society and the implications for the significant role that curriculum can play in improving student learning and health outcomes.
The framework examines the following:
- improved learning and wellness outcomes for Alberta students;
- the vision of wellness education in Alberta; and
- the role of a comprehensive school health approach to support and maintain a culture of wellness in school communities
Wellness education nurtures the whole child and enhances students capacity for achieving their full potential-intellectually, physically, socially, spiritually and emotionally. The new wellness education program will introduce a holistic approach to student wellness that incorporates the needs and priorities of Alberta students living and learning in the 21st century and provide a continuum of wellness education from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
The framework reinforces the Minister's commitment to enhancing the health and learning outcomes of all students and supports government ministries, schools, families and communities in working collaboratively to create and maintain a culture of wellness in school communities in Alberta.
If you would like further information on the information contained in the Framework, please contact Karen Fetterly, Team Leader, Kindergarten to Grade 12 Wellness Education, Curriculum Sector, Program Development and Standards Division.
